Why is it that there are only a handful of successful people in the world but an enormous amount of unsuccessful people? How can a person that runs so many companies and businesses be so productive, so happy, and achieve excellence where ever they go all the time? Guys like the Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Gary Vanerchuck. Why do these gentlemen seem like they are on top of their game all the time and they don't miss a beat?

From what they keep on telling us, it has to do with one particular thing: Consistent Self-awareness. Self-awareness is one of the greatest and toughest skills to master. Actually though. Just look at the percentage of successful people to unsuccessful people. It is nearly 99% to 1% if you are being cynical. A lot of the most influential people in today's world will credit their hard work and mindset from the beginning and the willingness to learn. But how do you start off developing these traits? Some people reading this blog post might actually have them but how do you know? You need to take consistent evaluations of yourself to truly know. Think about it. A person on a journey towards a destination (success, and or significance) cannot and will not get there without knowing where they are. It's impossible to guess especially if your journey takes a lifetime.

Self-awareness is defined as; "a conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires." Knowing oneself is critical to finding your purpose, fulfilling your dreams and becoming Fully Alive.

Cal Newport author of Deep Work, claims that “One of the most valuable skills in our economy is becoming increasingly rare. If you master this skill, you’ll achieve extraordinary results.” Become rare, Young Leaders, through consistent self-evaluations. Here's how:

Step 1: Silence

Find silence. Going off the principal of "to learn a valuable skill one must be increasingly rare," taking time for silence is huge. What do I mean by silence? I mean locking yourself in your room, avoiding all distractions which mean being distant from electronics and think. Thinking is a lost art altogether nowadays, but to keep our focus on self-awareness, I want you to think about your day with gratitude.

Which leads int step 2.

Step 2: Gratitude

Tons of people say being grateful is the best recipe for happiness and they are not far off. In terms of silence and self-awareness though, thinking about your blessings in your day subconsciously thinks about the positives which is key to really honing in on your strengths, your desires, and your motives

Step 3: Be mindful of your emotions

This step takes into your character. What were the parts of your day that you had high emotion or low emotion? A lot of the time the high emotion is the result of a passion or a desire you might have for something. It can also point to what you need to work on in terms of what brought you anxious thoughts or how you were stressed because at that moment you were not ready.

Your character is what defines you. How you handle your emotions and structuring them in a way of serving others is the result of strong character. Going through life without evaluating your emotions and taking them into account is like going up and down a rollercoaster and then coming to a screeching halt not remembering where you been and how you got there except through pictures. Young Leaders, I don't want that for you. Living a life looking back at photos constantly is a dangerous path, one that nobody should be on. Look forward and head in that direction. Create memories and do something that will not cause you to wish for "the old times."

Step 4: Build Fellowship

This is perhaps the toughest step because it will force you out of your comfort zone. You need a helping hand in this adventure and you cannot do it along.

"Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion." Jim Rohn

You need some discipline and it is crucial you get this piece because without it you will no longer be pointing fingers at excuses, rather, pointing at yourself as the best.

Step 4: Take action

Take action. You have been given the tools to slowly start becoming a lot more self-aware, the only thing missing is you taking action because you are still reading this post! Come one, take the time. Get off your phone and live it out.
